The Mercury Theatre on the Air was set up as a production company by the star of the stage version, Orson “Awesome” Welles (pictured). Featuring an impressive roster of dramatised classics that began with Dracula and included War of The Worlds which prompted mass hysteria when it aired. Listeners unused to radio devoid of the usual advertisments were seriously alarmed when their normal schedule was interupted by news reports of a martian invasion. Here starts urban legend, one of the best being a town experiencing a power cut during the programme witnessed its families taking to the surrounding mountains for fear of abduction. Very, very nice.
Ever wondered how Nick Cave would look dressed up as a Roman centurian? Well, wait no longer as John Hillcoat's gloriously camp video for Cave's band Grinderman features Romans, wolfmen and much, much more...
The video is for new track Heathen Child. Hilllcoat, who is repped by Factory Films, has been hard at work of late, having also directed this promo for The Answer by UNKLE, which was featured on the CR blog earlier this week.
Completing its trilogy of housing projects in Oerestad with the same client, BIG + green roof contractor Veg Tech receives the award for 8 House’s 1,700 sq m sloping green roof. The Scandinavian Green Roof Association based in Malmo, Sweden awarded the Best Green Roof in Scandinavia at an award ceremony at the 8 House in Oerestad, Copenhagen.
I’d like to wrap up this beautiful week with some final inspiration! It’s always fun to celebrate the arrival of the weekend so I’ve carefully selected some special places for you to see that I feel celebrate home, relaxation, friendship and beauty. All things that I love… And hopefully some in which you will connect to and enjoy as much as I do.

{Joo Joo, Samantha Hahn, MAV, Fine Day Press.}
{Glimpses of Rachel Ashwell’s London apartment in Lonny mag. These are all objects I would use to decorate my own home.}

{The always inspiring Skona Hem. The gray/almost periwinkle cabinet is lovely and I love the abstract floral painting too. The colors! Oh my! They are so warm and inviting.}
{These are some beautiful photos that really look but also feel like how a weekend should be… This amazing photography is by Catherine Gratwicke.}
{My favorite views from the home of Cath Kidston as seen in Lonny mag. I love the mantle most of all.}
{Oh, and this image also from Lonny… I love what Cath says here, “It’s very nice to be called the queen of something, isn’t it?.” So true!}
I hope these lovely images make the beginning of your weekend a lovely one. I will meet you back here on Monday with more inspirations and decorating tips and ideas for a brand new week of eye candy just for you!
And remember… the Blogging Your Way e-course is now accepting students who do not currently have a blog as well as the seasoned bloggers who need some inspiration and ideas. Eco luxury. The term seems contradictory. But sustainable architectural design is about not wasting your resources on a home designed to be thrown away. Alpine 2002 is designed with longevity and permanence in mind, to build a home that will be enjoyed for each of the next 250 years.
At 5,160 square feet and $3.5 million, it is not for everybody. But for the few, for the next few centuries, here’s how to design a home that pampers with the real luxury of permanent comfort.

Dual-coated double-pane windows roll open on aerospace grade ball bearings and nautical grade stainless steel to last centuries…

…they reflect back 92% of the energy on both sides, keep out the sun’s scorching rays in the summer, and the warmed air in in the winter.
The 9 KW solar system creates an abundance of energy. This is one system that will possibly need replacing, but not for a half-century, at least. (We don’t yet know how long solar systems will keep producing power, because the first ones built in the 1970s have not given out yet).
Supposedly this home uses 18% of the average home’s energy, but since the average home only needs a 5 KW system to produce all of its electricity, and this one produces only 82% of its energy with this solar, it is not all that green.
But the 9 KW solar system is producing all but 18% of what this home needs, including running an elevator up from the garage – that’s better than running all that from the grid, as most luxury homes do.

Porch: solid construction. Stone. Both earth walls and sandstone are used in various places for the construction.

I don’t know why we accept temporary building technology. Maybe we don’t believe there is much of a future, with climate change. But we need to think as if we and our descendants will be around for a bit.

We used to build for the long term. After all, there are stone castles that have been continuously inhabited for six, even seven centuries. This is a stone castle for the 21st century.

Looking for a kid’s gift? This Hand Fork & Hand Spoon set is adorable and would make dinner time just a little bit more special. Especially if you happen to be dealing with a picky eater.
The Hand Fork & Hand Spoon is a recent joint collaboration between Mitsubai Tokyo and illustrator Moe Furuya (whose name is not pronounced like one of the 3 stooges). The set retails for 3,150 yen. If you’re interested, you can see some of Furuya’s psychedelic illustrations HERE.
How awesome is this packaging? If I owned a store I would display them like books in a bookshelf.

In this post Frank Chimero shares every little piece of advice he can think of he would give current Graphic Design Students.
Some of my favorite nuggets of Chimero-wisdom are:
Design does not equal client work.
Keep two books on your nightstand at all times: one fiction, one non-fiction.
Develop a point of view. Think about what experiences you have that many others do not. Then, think of what experiences you have that almost everyone else has. Then, mix those two things and try to make someone cry or laugh or feel understood.
Adobe software never stops being frustrating.
If you meet a person who cares about the same obscure things you do, hold on to them for dear life. Sympathy is medicine.
Start brave and brash: you can always make things more conservative, but it’s hard to make things more radical.
Everyone is just making it up as they go along.
I am wondering about this one:
If you see a ladder in a piece of design or illustration, it means the deadline was short.
Frank, Can you explain?
Digital photography may have advanced considerably in recent years, but the fact remains that most group photos still lack the person holding the camera. Enter the fotopol, a camera mount for tourist spots that lets visitors get everyone in the picture.
Australian fotopol sells two models of its camera mounts. The fotopol stand (USD 2,350) is a permanently fixed, freestanding camera mount that's made from anodized aluminum with a galvanized steel base and stainless steel hardware; six colour options are available, as are etched and screen-printed designs. Local information and advertising can be displayed on the front panel as well. The fotopol balcony series, on the other hand, targets cruise ships and hotels with a permanent camera mount that gets attached either inside or outside the door frame of the balcony. Using the mount, passengers and guests can secure their camera, compose the shot, set the time delay and capture a memorable group photo. The balcony series comes in white; custom branding is available. Fotopol is also working on an interface that can make the balcony camera mount a rental option for passengers and visitors.
Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. Time to start scratching this particular itch for visitors to your own tourist attraction or hospitality locale? Alternatively, for photography and other consumer brands, time to investigate the advertising and sponsorship possibilities?

Launched in April, Libre Clothing produces garments with hidden zipper access points specifically designed to make it easier and more comfortable for patients to undergo chemotherapy, dialysis or other treatments requiring intravenous lines, catheters or infusion tubes.
The clothing range includes men's half-zip pullover sweaters priced at USD 54.99 and unisex half-zip pullover lightweight sweatshirts priced at USD 34.99. Men's and women's button-up shirts will be available soon, and a line of clothing for children who regularly receive dialysis or insulin injections is on the drawing board. One dollar from every sale goes to kidney research.
Libre Clothing is working closely with key strategic partners in the US including hospitals, dialysis clinics and the National Kidney Foundation. With minimal competition in the growing market of dialysis and chemotherapy patients, there's plenty of room for innovative products and services that will make life easier for this group of consumers.
