I posted not too long ago about the Tokyo edition of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, and this time it’s for an event organized by the group that doesn’t involve sketching. “Dr. Sketchy’s Exhibition Party” will showcase the works of participants — including pieces by Dr. Sketchy founder Molly Crabapple — with a few cabaret performances thrown in: Miss Erochica Bamboo, Violet Eva, The Murasaki Baby Dolls, Cherry Typhoon, and Safi. It happens Saturday, November 22 at La Boheme in Aoyama (Kotto-Dori) — 3,500 yen with drink at the door, 2,500 with drink in advance or with flyer (email them).

Tokyo-based designer Craig Mod updates his online portfolio with lots of new work — I really dig the fancy-shmancy project browser he put up.

Now this is how you spread info: create a Groovisions-like infographic video, like what the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has done to present the problems of current food habits in Japan. Sure, it gets a bit fascistic near the end, but it’s still an interesting take on the topic. Via Motionagrapher.

The organizers of the 101TOKYO art fair have announced a few details regarding next year’s edition. Fist, it takes place in April, same weekend as Art Fair Tokyo, and in 2009 will be held at Akiba Square, an event space inside the Akihabara Crossfield buidling.

I quite like the Muji Xmas 2008 catalog: ultra-compact — but thick — this year. It includes 124 gift items.

Headed out to Iidabashi tonight to meet up with the TAB/AQ crew to celebrate the birthday of TAB staffer extraordinaire Kaori. We went to Hive Cafe (1F Grand Plus, 4-7-4 Iidabashi), newly opened this week, and from the same owner of the terrific Boulangerie A in Sanbancho (near Co-Lab). It was quite the feast!

Big shout out to Ian for the lovely cards he designed for the Néojaponisme posse.

Oh, that would be me.
It’s my great pleasure to announce that as of next month I will become one half of the PingMag editorial team, replacing the departing — and very dear — Verena Dauerer. Somehow, it feels like it was destined to happen — maybe the reason I link so often to them — and I’m very, very excited at the prospect of contributing to a site I’ve followed and loved for so long.
And yes, this means I’m leaving Wired’s Game|Life — I become unWired tomorrow. As most of my friends know, I really have enjoyed covering the games industry over the past eight months — and I hope to continue to do so in some capacity in the future as well — but being at PingMag means that I get back to covering all of the things that make up my mind-space: art, design, pop culture, music, architecture, film, etc.
Hope you’ll all follow me there!

We have a new exhibition at Cafe Pause this week by Argentinian illustrators Colorblok and Parquerama. It runs until November 16.

Another year, another end of Tokyo Design Week, and another departure by Jesper. This time he was accompanied by his Next Century Modern crew — Ola and Christopher — and it was a pleasure to meet them for the first time. They organized a farewell party last Friday night in Nakameguro at a cool little bar called Hakoniwa — very close to the station, facing the tracks. Here’s already looking forward to next year’s visit!

If you’re in Miami next month — December 2-7 to be exact — you’ll want to drop by “Death by Basel,” a new show curated by Digiki and Agatha Wara, and including lots of Tokyo love. Check out this post by Digiki for all the details.

A big thanks to everyone who made it out to this month’s edition of PauseTalk (Vol. 26). We touched on a few topics, but talk mostly revolved around White Rabbit Press’ newly launched Tokyo Realtime audio tour series.
Below, the list of participants. The next PauseTalk happens December 1.
