UK designer fiona thomson aimed to contemporize the past with her graduate project collection.
the recent university of brighton grad designed three different products which take an item from the
past and invigorate it for a contemporary world. ‘sit’ transforms the iconic ‘nipper’ dog into table lamp,
while ‘cordless candelabra’ is a battery powered LED candelabra and ‘ode to beethoven’ turns the
composer’s familiar bust into an unusual ipod dock. who knew the past was so modern?

In the jam-packed booth of quirky housewares company 2Jane—which reps U.K. designers like Mibo, Mixco, and Emma Jeffs in the U.S.—we discovered this simple-but-brilliant design: Mibo’s 15-cm-square tile tattoos. The stick-on vinyl decals are easy to apply and waterproof once adhered—an ideal solution for jazzing up those ubiquitous 4 1/4-inch white ceramic tiles (which no doubt cover the walls of your bathroom, too).

scenes from a new environmental defense fund ad

this past march designboom featured a street art project by new york artist joshua allen harris.
harris cleverly attached windsock animals made from plastic bags to subway grates in new york.
when a subway passed by below, the gust of wind would inflate the animal, bringing it to life.
the unusual project gained a lot of attention in the media, making its way around the blogosphere.

in an update to this article, we recently discovered a new television ad for the environmental
defense fund featuring very similar polar bear shaped windsocks. created by ogilvy new york,
the ad promotes using public transportation by drawing a connection between driving cars and
the deflation of the plastic polar bears. no word on joshua allen harris’ connection to the new ad.

for this year's international architecture biennale in venice UNStudio has produced ‘the changing room’
as part of the exhibition 'out there: architecture beyond building' curated by aaron betsky.

'the UNStudio installation in the arsenale explores the transformative potential of the material world.
just like clothes designers, architects offer alternate looks and identities, age and income-appropriate
shells. these constructions consist of a miscellaneous package of endogenous and exogenous
values; things and ideas that inherently belong to architecture and its traditions, and things and ideas
that do not, but that nevertheless profoundly influence architecture. how to deal with this?
can architecture still have autonomy? according to unstudio the lesson is to ‘switch it on, switch it off’…
to find autonomy in brief moments of liberation.'

'the installation structure shows an architecture that is as supple as textile, in which floors, walls and
ceilings flow into each other. on the inside, the visitor encounters a kaleidoscopic world of people posing,
inviting voyeurism, and seeking transformation in their own conceptualizations of the changing room.'

Hidden Radio

Australian designer John Van Den Nieuwenhuizen, now based in San Francisco, sums up the intuitive nature of his Hidden Radio: “The product attempts to be silent both visually and functionally by having the cap in the downward position. By lifting up the cap the user proportionally increases the volume. The further the cap goes up the louder the sound gets. To tune the radio you simply rotate the cap and receive feedback of tuning quality via the LED on the front.”

Sara Huston: Art + Design

Sara Huston's work nicely subverts our expectations about the behavior of objects--here, furniture--but still provides the function we look for in the end. Above is the Lifestyle Coffee Table (which she will customize to your favorite magazines), and below, the Expectation 5 cupboard, which, I suppose, is really a shelf...or a drawer. Well, you get the idea.

Here's Sara in her own words:

I allow for signifiers of use, such as a door, shelf, or a drawer, with these elements becoming just enough information for the viewer/user to relate to. Through this denial I start to uncover ways furniture communicates and challenges viewers/users to question their expectations of something they are familiar with. The viewer/user then can begin to locate meaning because of this familiarity and start to make sense of the piece. It is important to me that my works challenge how people see art and design and the differences or similarities they have, they can begin looking at both in a new way.

the exhibition examines different trends and perspectives in contemporary art photography through the bias of

DIY Bike Beats

A new biker gang is roaming the streets of Richmond Hill, Queens. This crew of mostly teenagers can be seen riding along 103rd Avenue just west of the Van Wyck Expressway.

The teens, all originally from Trinidad have taken to the hobby of tricking out their BMX bikes with huge sound systems. The bikes range from the modest “Tinnitus Rex” to the ridiculously speaker heavy “Basszilla”.

There is a documentary out called Made In Queens that focuses on their wild customized bikes. You can also check out the trailer on you tube.
And I thought I was cool customizing my BMX with an ace of spades pegged to the spokes.

But that was in the 80’s

austrian architect peter jellitsch has designed 'liquid body' a store front concept. originally modeled
from a rectangular block 'liquid body' is a wave like structure intended to connect surrounding streets
and pedestrians to the store. the space can also be used as an area to hold events, such as fashion
shows.

the 'portsmouth vernacular' project, 2008

jodie silsby a graduate from the university of portsmouth, UK has sent in images of her most
recent projects. trained as a graphic designer her projects are focussed around typography.
she has created the 'portsmouth vernacular' a mapping project that illustrates the city in relation
to dialect and language based around portsmouth and 'hearsay' a book that explores speech,
containing transluscent paper that is entirely screen printed.

led by johnny wong and miho hirabayahi, the hong kong design group FAK3 recently finished the design of a
two-storey organic fine dining restaurant called beo* (beautifully organic). for the two level interior, FAK3 designed
the 'cocoon' bar and lounge located in the basement. to enter, visitors descend down a stone clad staircase,
led by a twisted balustrade into the white cavernous lounge area. lit by FAK3's 'china dreams' floor lamps,
the space mimics a cocoon using warm, neutral tones that create a soft, relaxing feel.

ManufRactured exhibition at Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft

Since opening the doors at their new location last year, Portland's Museum of Contemporary Craft has been falling over itself trying to become the design museum so many of the residents of this quietly design-obsessed town desperately want. Case in point, the upcoming ManufRactured show, opening this coming Thursday the 28th.

Curated by former ID Magazine editor Steven Skov Holt, among others, the show gathers together 16 artists and designers who've been doing curious things with repurposed materials over the past few years. Some recent high-profile projects will be on display, including Cat Chow's zipper dress, Dominic Wilcox's War Bowl, and at least one of Jason Rogenes' fantastic styrofoam packing insert lanterns (example shown above); admission is free.

Wallace & Gromit's fashion debut

Wallace & Gromit have had a make-over and picked up a bit of modeling work to promote the soon-to-open Harvey Nichols store in Bristol. We're sure this will be a popular choice as no-one celebrates quintessential Britishness better than local claymation artist Nick Park from Aardman Animations.

Wallace wears an Alexander McQueen navy cashmere and silk suit, Dolce & Gabbana fitted white shirt and a Giorgio Armani tie. Gromit sports a navy silk Paul Smith scarf. Did Wallace lose weight for the shoot?
