'the strata tower' designed by architects hani rashid and lise anne couture of asymptote recently began
construction in abu dhabi. the 40 story luxary residential project is set to be complete in 2011 with a total height
of 160 m. the design will be featured this month at cityscape abu dhabi from may 13-15. the most distinctive
features of the building are its environmentally responsive louver system and side mounted heli-pad. the louvre
system was designed specifically for the intense heat of the region and is integrated into the building's
cantilevered exoskeleton which surrounds the building. sophisticated computer and parametric modeling was
used throughout the project creating a new icon for the waterfront development in abu dhabi.

the new exhibition at london's wallis gallery, 'the dark show', began on april 17th and will continue until may 17th.
the group show is curated by katie guggenheim and takes place in complete darkness. the only light in the show
comes form the art works themselves. the seventeen artists on show use this unique atmosphere in different
ways. visitors are also given a flashing device to help them navigate through the gallery which is outfitted with
transparent architectural details. the viewers experience is always different since each work changed from the
influence of others. the show will be reopened for one night only at formcontent project space on june 4.

the 'terminal' is an exhibition featuring the works of australian born artist justine cooper who currently
resides in new york. the works on display 'rapt 1' and 'rapt 2' are centred around the medical field and
displays a perverse way of how humans are connected with medical technology, it features a
series of x-rays and photos of mannequins connected to technology. the 'terminal' is a two part installation
celebrating the 10 year anniversary of these pieces and will be on display at daneyal mahmood gallery,
new york until june 14th.

new york city's meatpacking district will be taken over by finnish design for new york design week 2008.
from may 17th to 19th 'hardcore: new finnish design' will exhibit the work of 20 designers curated by designer
ilkka suppanen. the designers on show come from a wide range of fields including graphic design, fashion and
product design. the show aims to demonstrate the unique character of finnish design and establish the country's
established and up and coming deign talent.

'freestyle: new australian design for living' is an exhibition featuring works from 40 australian designers, both
established and upcoming. some of the designers include adam goodrum, jon goulder who participated in
designboom's 'living simplicity in furniture design competition', nick rennie who participated in our
designboom mart tokyo 05 and whose work is also featured in 'handled with care' a designboom book available
in our online store. many of the works are handmade and one off pieces. the exhibition displays a wide range
of works from various design fields, such as furniture, lighting, homewares, accessories, jewelery, fashion
and textiles. after touring australia the exhibition has now come to milan and will be on display at triennale
design museum, until june 29th.
