SUPERMARKET is held for the second time intentionally during the pre-Christmas period. It is intended to be an ironic opposition to the current approach, full of unnecessary Christmas over-production of low quality, to which SUPERMARKET endeavors to offer a more purposeful and valuable alternative.
SUPERMARKET is opened from 10am to 8pm every day

WHO is SUPERMARKET?
More than 30 exhibiting studios, to whom is given integrated space and basic components of expositions. Selected progressive designers of younger generation which are engaged in product and furniture design, porcelain, ceramic and glass design, design objects, jewelery and fashion. On SUPERMARKET show works designers already established as well as young designers, fresh absolovents of Art schools, student-designers, soliteurs even formalized design studios. All showed products of the authors is possible to buy over there.

One the parts of SUPERMARKET is also Market Líba, small market with products of designers which don’t have their own presentation, but their work fits into the “fresh” concept of the festival. Other point of interest is a SUPERMARKET library with books and magazines from Czech and international publishers aimed at design, graphics, architecture and lifestyle. There’s either possibility to buy selected books.

For all for whom it is important to develop their own individuality and not to be a small part of the crowd. For all for whom design means one of the possible ways for self expression. For all who like beautiful and original objects and love to be surrounded by them. For all who do not want to miss this unique opportunity to meet the designers in person and buy their works directly from them.

STORY of the SUPERMARKETdesignfest
Supermarkets as temples of consumer culture evolving their own marketing procedures, logistics, and system of functioning are attributes of the XXIth century. Their occurrence, in particular in the Czech Republic, is enormous, and as such they have become an integral part of our lives. SUPERMARKET designfest is an original response to this phenomenon, trying to oppose it through offering experience of totally different nature. SUPERMARKET designfest grants experience which is not linked with cheap mass production products of questionable aesthetic looks, but with original, unique and well manufactured products made by young Czech designers with strong looks and added value. Products that do not lose half of their price at the very moment you buy them, but objects that are good investment and the value of which will most probably increase in future which is true not only for individual original pieces but for limited collections as well.

Whitefruits
Another reason why SUPERMARKET was founded is the current ambiguous situation in the area of the so-called authorship design. There are minimum occasions for young designers and artists to present their works for general public, in contrast to the mighty competing power of global companies and trade marks. Basic platform supporting and promoting young designers and providing them with space both for presentation of their works and for meetings that would cover their works, is still missing in the Czech Republic. SUPERMARKET endeavors to become the starting point in the vacuum, and to serve as one of the reasons for both newcomers and established young designers, why not to go in purely commercial sector. And last but not least: SUPERMARKET wants to become a temporary centre for the designers to meet, discuss, and exchange their opinions and experience, to establish new contacts and co-operation.

If we look at the problem from the other side of view - view of the broad public and the producers – the situation is not “pink” either. Although their interest in design has been increasing gradually, for many people it is still the “great unknown”, although they “have heard” about it. SUPERMARKET grants people an opportunity to be introduced to pieces of art of good taste, about the existence, looks and quality of which many of them did not know, or did know but considered them too expensive to buy. SUPERMARKET wants to remove such taboos and help open eyes to all who are interested in design. To offer them works and products with pleasant prices, the origin of which is not based solely on market reasons but created with enthusiasm, which is reflected in the products´ quality and artistic value. And for those who already have enough information and knowledge of the Czech design scene, and enjoy owning original art pieces, SUPERMARKET is a good opportunity to come and see, and eventually buy, the works at a single place, moreover in friendly and relaxed environment.

SUPERMARKET COLLECTION
Newie of SUPERMARKET’08 will be a Collection. Into it the jury of SUPERMARKET’08 selects a narrow number of products which were showen on the festival and were created recently, during this year. The aim of the SUPERMARKET colection is to archive these products and during the next years to create a comprehensive collection documenting the evolution of a young Czech design and its the best examples.
